LFW Spring 2012: Burberry Prorsum

Burberry Prorsum never fails to show an inspiring collection. At London Fashion Week, its Spring 2012 line may have opted for a more subtle palette over bright seasonal colors, but the trade worked well because it allowed the details to shine. Designer Christopher Bailey was in the right mood for intricate detail and this time around, found genius in beading, crochet, carving, weaving, braiding and printing, reported Style.com, with notes of African inspiration. Bailey, a master, again created must-have outerwear that even from a mile away is, without a doubt, signature Burberry Prorsum.

The African vibe inspired elaborate trims and geometric shapes, which quickly left a memorable first impression. Bailey offered large, flat beads in the shape of triangles, squares and rectangles. These geometric beads were displayed in line formations, creating magnificent trimmed collars and statement necklaces. Complementing the collar beadwork, round pellets and complex raffia stitching were woven together to create cummerbund belts to cinch trench coat looks. Bailey carried the motif into materials; his idea of Spring included colorful textured stripes and zigzags for outerwear and skirts, featuring a lively print of geometric shapes.

And, of course, a Burberry runway would not be complete without the iconic trench coat that always makes it on everyone’s lust list. This season, the trench coat boasted prints, plaids, solids, and black and gold stripes with intense, bead-embellished collars and belts. While the trench still carries on strong, Bailey also added a new favorite staple jacket to the 2012 collection: the parka. The designer pulled out all the stops when designing the parka, choosing massive fur collars, contrasting whipstitch trimming, woven leather sleeves and beadwork. The chic parka had cropped lengths, perfect for styling with skirts and long versions that could be pulled off as a look of their own.

Bailey was not only inspired by African details this season, but also sophisticated ladylike silhouettes. The womenswear showcased all skirts and dresses without a pair of pants in sight. The looks forecasted an upcoming era of pencil and pleated skirts that embraced longer, knee-grazing hemlines. Skirts with high-waisted lines were paired with embellished blouses, classy cardigans and fitted sweaters.

Accessories and footwear completed the collection and were not shy on this runway. The beads, woven textures and stitching were translated into wedges, sunglasses, hats and handbags. Bailey continued the Spring wedge trend with braided uppers and round-beaded, ankle-straps sandals.

Wedge open-toe booties and loafers also appeared, with the wedge platforms wrapped in wovens, bright graphics and stripes. Handbags in tote and shoulder shapes were decorated in raffia, myriad of thin belt straps and matching whipstitching. Whipstitch made its way onto sunglasses in a contrasting colors. Light, tortoise, oval frames were trimmed with yellow stitching, going for a bold style that creates better appeal. Models’ looks were completed with bobbles hats with short visors.

Bailey’s collection was another success for Burberry Prorsum. His design aesthetic remains a brilliant formula - jammed-packed details while never losing focus.
