London 2012 Olympic limited edition collections
Kicking off this Friday, the London 2012 Olympic games are just around the corner, but designers have already launched pieces and collections to celebrate the worldwide sports festivities. Shoes, accessories and apparel have been adorned and embellished with interpretations of the Union Jack flag, which is no stranger to fashion and perfectly spot on for the games. Designers got creative with the Union Jack, composing studded or Swarovski crystal versions, using it for an all-over effect or in more subtle manners. Footwear designer Aruna Seth showed off her British pride with blue and red wedges complete with the Union Jack flag on the heel. Seth also crafted a black Swarovski wedge detailed with the colorful Olympic rings that is currently on display at Harrods in London.

The iconic British flag also blazed across Lulu Guinness’s snakeskin lips clutch, Nancy Gonzalez’s crocodile clutch, Jimmy Choo’s smoking slipper and Charlotte Olympia’s Jubilee Pandora clutch that paid homage to Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. Cesare Paciotti celebrated in a less obvious manner with white and pink Lady Victoria booties featuring the rings.
“The shoe itself represents the perfect marriage between the sexy woman’s spirit and the highest example of sporting spirit,” Paciotti said to WWD.com.

To embody sports and the Olympics, active accessories were a popular choice to transform. Luxury leather goods and footwear brand MCM (Mode Creation Munich) launched a limited edition backpack series to commemorate the 2012 event. In bright, entertaining colors, the backpacks include the Union Jack insignia and the MCM logo. Y-3 also got into the spirit with duffel bags, backpacks and sneakers showing off Britain’s blue, red and white.

Alongside the flag, there were also other motifs including previous Olympics’ logos. Gap encouraged fans to raise their colors with an exclusive collection of Olympic vintage tees. The shirts take a journey through the different cities where the games have taken place from Tokyo to Montreal to Los Angeles.

Adidas and Opening Ceremony joined in an exciting collaboration to create a swim and cycling-inspired collection. The men’s and women’s collaboration boasts body-con dresses in Opening Ceremony’s iconic print, zip-off workpants, mini skirts with reflective trim, skin tight bike shorts, neoprene parkas and more.
