LUX-Health: Eating Right for Your Teeth

We’re all familiar with the phrase, ‘you are what you eat.’ However, many of us may be unknowingly consuming items that could be deteriorating the health of our teeth!!

Despite dentists warnings about the negative effects carbonated drinks and sugar have on the health of our teeth, research now shows this ‘don’t list’ could be much larger then previously expected.

“We all became aware of the sugar on your teeth. What most of us don’t know is the acid,” said Dr. Mohamed Bassiouny, a restorative dentistry professor at Temple University. “Cavities form when bacteria in the mouth mixes with sugar, leading to decay. Erosion occurs when chemicals strip the mineral off the teeth.

It seems that ‘acidy’ drinks, such as tea, fruit juices (orange, lemon, grapefruit) and some energy drinks (Red Bull, Gatorade) can affect the condition of our enamel. Making it much more susceptible to erosion and eventually decay! The acid in these drinks can actually strip the protective layers off of our teeth with long-term exposure and cause serious issues: ‘ hypersensitivity, discoloration and even cracks’! Over time, these problems could lend to the loss of the teeth, crowns, dentures, and even heart disease.

Here are some ways to protect that ‘golden smile’. The easiest step is to watch what you consume from a beverage standpoint. Know that moderation is key and if you choose to have an acid-infused beverage or sugary one, try rinsing with water right after. Even the practice of brushing your teeth throughout the day can help to minimize some of the concerns. For those tea-loving, juice-obsessed, soda drinkers, you might want to try new toothpaste, Crest Pro-Health Enamel Shield or Sensodyne Pronamel, both aim at strengthening your tooth enamel!!

So LUXies, are there other ways you know of protecting your pearly whites?? Now that you’re equipped with this information, does it influence your drink of choice??
