There’s something about plaid and tartans during the winter holidays that just feels right. Maybe it’s a certain coziness from the traditional wool or the warm colors, but either way, plaid’s got festive written all over it. So add some cheerful checked pattern to your winter wardrobe with these great plaid dresses, outerwear, separates and accessories.

Bold and blue, Adam’s tartan pencil skirt is a great choice for a holiday lunch with coworkers or the girlfriends. Landing just above the knee, the blue plaid is accented with solid black trim and patch hip pockets perfect to fit a candy cane or two. For the daytime, pair with a black sweater or blouse for easy chicness. If color is what you’re after, amp it up by combining the blue with a bright yellow or jolly red top.

Red plaid pants can go tough chic or ultra glam, but whatever style you choose, you can make it merry. McQ Alexander McQueen’s plaid cropped pants feature zipper exposed pockets and front closure. To add some toughness, style with a pair of studded pumps, casual white T-shirt, tuxedo blazer and trendy, chunky choker. To glam things up a couple notches, combine the plaid pants with a sparkling sequin or silver cropped cardigan sweater and finish the outfit with simple sandals.

You don’t have to save wearing plaid dresses for when you’re in Scotland. Jen Kao’s and Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. have created tartan dresses for the stylish woman. With a scooped neck, tiered handkerchief hem and wide leather trimming, Jen Kao’s number suggests the material’s historical roots. Toss on black ankle booties to rock the look.

L.A.M.B.’s option combines the staple bustier dress with an olive-colored plaid for a modern take. With its asymmetrical front panels, the plaid contrasts against the wool and softens the sweetheart neckline. For a festive holiday gathering, add a leather jacket and pair of pumps.

There’s nothing cozier than a warm plaid blanket – except maybe an oversized plaid sweater jacket. Sonia Rykiel’s red tartan version is perfection with a large shawl collar and ribbed edges and sleeves. This comfortable yet chic sweater is the answer to casual get-togethers and sitting around sipping gingerbread lattes. Considering its volume, pair with slim-fitting pants or skirts to balance the huge silhouette.

For a more traditional coat, Opening Ceremony offers a classic style with a notched collar and three-button closure. Cinched at the waist, it has a soft feminine essence that flatters any figure. Work this coat into everyday looks with shift dresses, wide-leg pants or even shorts.
