Pre-Fall 2012: Louis Vuitton

If there was one word to describe Louis Vuitton’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection, it would be whimsical. During a season in which most designers went with streamlined silhouettes and cool sleekness, this fashion house’s design director Julie de Libran moved to her own beat. This beat could possibly have been Disney’s “It’s a Small World,” which played during the presentation, as reported by Style.com. De Libran focused on a girly 1940s theme inspired from Charlotte Perriand, a well-known Parisian architect and designer with a great sense of personal style.

The 1940s vibe played out in sweet collection of coats and dresses with rounded silhouettes – not a far cry from some of Spring’s soft pastel numbers. However, this Pre-Fall, De Libran envisioned the ensembles in a classic palette of camel, black, gray, green and navy. The colors steered the toggle coats layered over day dresses, sleeveless cinched babydolls, long fur vests with contrasting pockets and skirtsuits bordering on overly prissy. The designer also managed to include a few prints with tailored notes. Suits with boxy blazers appeared in a subtle gray-tone leopard print, blue houndstooth made for a bold, straight skirt and matching motorcycle look, and a simple, modern floral print mingled with a checked print.

Aside from the rounded silhouettes, the collection drew its whimsical characteristics from quirky details and accessories. Peter Pan collars were supersized to exaggerated proportions and decked out in white fur. Pockets on coats and vests also got the same jumbo-sized treatment, while ankle boots were covered in a heavy dose of fur. Totes came in cylindrical forms, reviving the Papillion bag, but in a smaller size and de-embossed. And sealing the deal on the sweetness, models were completed in berets – the perfect Parisian touch.

Louis Vuitton has seen back-to-back seasons of feminine, girly darlingness – a serious hint from the fashion house to shed the sleek attire of past seasons. As this collection is only starting off the season, chances are the brand will be offering more dainty silhouettes in Fall – in case you haven’t jumped on board yet.
