Radar: Cut Hair for a Crisis

Matter of a Trust, an NGO based in San Francisco, is reportedly causing quite a stir on the cutting room floors. Literally. The non-profit is asking salons and the beautiful public, to consider cutting a few locks for charity. All the human hair that is donated will go into woven, oil-absorbent mats in an effort to clean up oil spills in the United States. Why not use our oily hair for something?

Besides hair, givers can donate fur and nylon hose for the national fiber recycling movement. The web site notes that there are over 300,000 salons in the U.S. and each collects about a pound of hair a day. Instead of putting it in the dumpster, send it to Matter of Trust where they’ll use your strands to clean up petroleum oil spills.

So next time you catch a glimpse of the Gulf of Mexico, rethink throwing your old bangs in the bucket.
