Return to the 90’s

As we move into a new decade, designers and fashionistas look toward a new decade for inspiration. That’s right, we’re over all the drama and embellishment of the 80’s and moving on to the minimal and grungy fashion era of the 90’s. Think Kelly Taylor – original Beverly Hills 90210 of course – Gwen Stefani in her early No Doubt days, Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford. These icons made blazers, oxfords, white tees and Doc Martens legendary.

On the runway, Spring 2010 collections were already showing signs of the 90’s. Chanel brought back the clogs, neutral colors, and fluttery blouses in their country theme collection. D&G went wild wild west on us with their explosion of denim and khaki everything. Denim and khaki shirts, shorts, dresses, jackets, pants, jumpers – they had it all. For Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs also reinvented the clog, went with active-inspired materials, and resurrected the biker shorts. D&G and MJ also created a comeback for the fanny pack – yes the fanny pack.

So there is no escaping it. It’s time to trade the tights in for acid-wash denim, the leather jacket for a denim jacket, mountains of chains for a simple pendant and dig up your old bodysuit and crop tops. Fashion will be turning a corner and going with softer, effortless looks and perhaps bringing the GAP look back to cool.
