Wellness Wednesday: What Your Cravings Really Mean

Powerful and all-consuming, we all have those moments of weakness when it seems as if you have no other choice but to give in to your cravings. What you may not know is that often times a craving is telling your body that your are deficient in one or more key nutrients or that you are emotionally imbalanced in some way. Read on to see where the root of your cravings lie and start to nip them in the bud.

Salt

When you sweat, you lose salt from your body, which may in turn lead to cravings for salty foods if you don’t rehydrate. Drink plenty of fluids and help replace electrolytes with a glass of coconut water. Craving salt may also mean you have a mineral deficiency. Make sure you are eating a well balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Chocolate

We’re all familiar with this one. Chocolate increases levels of serotonin in the brain, so it's often craved during emotional times when a pick me up is needed. Women experience lower levels prior to menstruation, which is why these cravings are so powerful at that time! Chocolate is high in magnesium, so if you’re craving chocolate, fill up on magnesium-rich foods such as raw seeds, nuts and legumes. If you must give in, stick to a couple squares of antioxidant-rich dark chocolate.

Carbohydrates

Can’t get your eyes off that bowl of pasta? Ask yourself how you’ve been sleeping lately. Carbs are our main source of fuel so we often crave them when we are tired. To help decrease feelings of fatigue, go for a walk or do some simple yoga to get your blood flowing. Try to stick to complex carbs such as beans and whole grains when cravings set in.

Creamy

They’re called comfort foods for a reason! If you’re craving creamy foods such as mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese you may be worried and literally in need of a little comfort. Most of these foods are high in fat and carbs, triggering the release of dopamine, which is associated with feelings of pleasure and reward. Calm yourself by lighting a few candles and relaxing in a warm bath or getting cozy under a blanket with a feel-good movie.

Sweets

If your sweet tooth is kicking in, it may indicate a blood sugar imbalance. Mineral deficiencies such as chromium and magnesium may also be at play. Beware: giving into sugar will lead to more cravings so grab a piece of fruit to help cravings subside. Dehydration can amplify the effect so be sure to drink plenty of water.

Crunchy

Often times if it’s crunchy foods such as chips or pretzels that you’re craving, you may be frustrated or irritated. Crunching will help to temporarily release angst, but as soon as you finish, it can creep back up on you. Keep healthy snacks on hand such as carrots and celery with hummus for when these cravings strike.

Fats

If you’re contemplating a stop at your local burger joint, your body may be in need of essential fatty acids. Because it takes longer to burn calories in fatty foods, blood sugar levels are stabilized to help soothe moodiness. Your body needs fat to function, so be sure to fill up on healthy fats such as avocados, almonds and salmon.
